ℹ️ Understanding The Calculator Fields
A detailed breakdown of each input field and what the calculator computes.

🔧 Main Parameters The Calculator Asks For:

📏 Dimensions

  • Total Fence Length (ft): The base parameter for all calculations.
  • Fence Height (ft): Affects the number of horizontal rails and the length of vertical pickets/slats.

🔩 Construction

  • Distance Between Posts (ft, 6-8 recommended): Determines the number of fence sections and posts required.
  • Number of Sections / Spans: Calculated automatically based on total length and post spacing.
  • Number of Horizontal Rails: Depends on fence height; typically 2 for shorter fences (under 5ft), 3 for medium (5-7ft), and 4 for taller ones. This is auto-suggested.
  • Fence Style (Picket, Privacy, Shadowbox, Horizontal): Significantly affects the number and arrangement of pickets/slats and overall material usage.

🧱 Materials

  • Wood Type (Pine, Cedar, Redwood): The cost per linear foot for wood varies significantly between types. Pressure-treated pine is often the most economical, while cedar and redwood are more expensive but offer greater durability and pest resistance.
  • Picket/Slat Width (in): For vertical styles, this is the width of each picket. For horizontal styles, this is the height of each slat. Used to calculate how many are needed.
  • Spacing Between Pickets/Slats (in): For vertical styles, the gap between pickets. For horizontal, the vertical gap between slats. Zero for privacy styles.
  • Wood Treatment (Sealant, Stain, Paint, None): Adds to material cost (treatment product) and potentially labor if not DIY. Protects the wood and enhances appearance.

🚪 Additional Elements

  • Number of Gates (Single / Double): Each gate adds a fixed material cost and can increase installation complexity.
  • Decorative Elements (Post Caps, Lattice Top): Optional aesthetic enhancements that add to material costs. Post caps protect post tops, while lattice adds a decorative touch.

⚒️ Installation

  • Include Installation Cost (Yes/No): Allows you to see an estimate with or without professional labor. Default is 'No'.
  • Soil Type (Level/Easy, Slope/Moderate, Rocky/Difficult): Affects the labor cost for installation due to increased difficulty and time.

💲 Unit Costs

  • Use Custom Material Prices: A toggle switch. If ON, you can input your own prices for pickets/slats, rails, posts, and treatment. If OFF (default), the calculator uses pre-defined average prices.
  • Price per Linear Foot for Pickets/Slats, Rails, Posts ($): If custom prices are enabled, enter current market prices for these materials. These are critical for accurate material cost estimation.
  • Price for Wood Treatment per Sq. Ft. ($): If custom prices are enabled and treatment is selected, enter the cost of sealant, stain, or paint per square foot of fence surface area.
  • Labor Rate Type (Per Foot / Per Section) & Labor Rate: If including installation, specify how labor is charged and the rate. This is used to calculate total installation cost.

📐 What The Calculator Computes:

  • Total number of pickets/slats: Calculated based on fence length, picket/slat width, and spacing.
  • Total linear feet of rail material: Based on fence length and number of rails.
  • Total number of posts: Calculated from total length and post spacing (total length / spacing + 1). Post length includes portion to be buried.
  • Total number of fence sections.
  • Estimated number of fasteners: A rough estimate for screws, nails, and potentially concrete mix for posts.
  • Approximate surface area for treatment: Calculated if a wood treatment is selected, helps estimate treatment material quantity.
  • Total material cost: Sum of costs for all wood components, treatment, gates, and decorative elements, using either default or custom prices.
  • Total installation cost: Calculated if professional installation is selected, based on labor rate and project complexity factors like soil type.
  • Grand total estimated cost: The sum of material and installation costs.
